Prototyping Langspil

Siglufjörður is located 40 km below the Arctic Circle in the north of Iceland, where the annual festival of Icelandic folk music takes place in the summer. Siglufjörður is also home to the Museum of Traditional Icelandic Folk Music, based on one of Bjarni Þorsteinsson’s most important collections. (Íslensk þjóðlög from 1906 – 1909) This makes this small village a melting pot of Icelandic traditions. Thanks to an artist residency (DEC 18/JAN 19) at Herhús, we were able to spend more time with Icelandic traditions, working hands-on, developing content and experimenting with formats.

One form of experimentation was to sample the langspil (traditional Icelandic instrument) from the folk music centre and find a digital translation.

This Movie is a time-lapse from our upstairs window, accompanied by the very first version of the digital transformation of the real instrument (langspil) from the museum.
